RUNNING A ROCK CLUB WITH SAGUIJO’S ANGELO CARLOS
Along a dark Makati side street, Saguijo stands out like a beacon of noise. Cars are parked on both sides of the street, and people spill out onto its sidewalks, smoking and carrying on conversations. Inside, it doesn’t get much brighter. The stage is immediately to the left. People entering take care not to be conspicuous as they make their way to the bar or upstairs to the art gallery. The band, in their deep concentration, doesn’t notice anyway. It’s Wednesday. The middle of the week. Hump day. Every other place would be a ghost town, but not Saguijo. Yuppies from nearby Ayala Avenue mingle alongside long-haired hippies, sipping their beers and listening to a jazz band with a female singer.

DO THE HELIPAD DANCE: DIEGO MAPA AND JASON CABALLA ON PEDICAB’S SOPHIE OUTING
Pedicab’s arrival in 2005 as a superband of sorts was absolute cause celebre. I mean, hell, the merry band of punksters counted, in its roster, Diego Mapa on vocals, Raimund Marasigan on bass synth, Mike Dizon on drums, and Jason Caballa on guitar. That’s really having the best of eight or so bands both alive and dead—Eraserheads, Teeth, Monsterbot, Twisted Halo, Cambio, Squid 9, Eggboy, and Blast Ople—give or take one or two more. Meanwhile, lauded film and video director R.A. Rivera has recently made the transition from video-projectionist to sound-effects guy in-studio and onstage. Three years after Tugish Takish and ad infinitum associations with Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes, and bands of the sort, Pedicab puts out its second record, Shinji, Ilabas Mo Na ang Helicopter, which contains an obtuse reference to celebrated studio engineer Shinji “Shinjineer” Tanaka. In their much-awaited second outing, the band puts a more Pinoy spin on things and proves it could be done—and well. I caught up with Diego Mapa and Jason Caballa and we chewed the fat about dance punk, post-punk, their incestuous musical relationships, and feigning sleep when recognizing people in public transport.

Hale is back: recharged, and ready again to face the hordes of fans (remember the days of Broken Sonnet?) and critics alike. They captured listeners’ attention (and for some, hearts) with their distinct melodrama, followed up with a subtle and semi-serious Twilight, and now, post-hiatus, Above, Over, and Beyond.
