DIVINE WRITE: SONGWRITERS AND THE CREATIVE PROCESS
There is nothing more elusive than the artistic process. Often, being asked to speak of one’s craft is like being asked to describe the sun, the stars, or the wind: you’d be right, but you’d be terribly mistaken as well. It is also not dissimilar to annotating a movie for the blind—the slipperiness, the state of being water, the groping in the opaque dark. While master practitioners of a particular art-form may be supreme technicians, they could not always be expected to articulate on technique in the most objective manner. In this short essay, I, along with fellow songwriters Ely Buendia, Dong Abay, Vin Dancel, and Owel Alvero, attempt to grasp the ungraspable: the songwriting process.

The optical zooming function and the night mode feature weren’t exactly obliging, especially to someone who was seated at the Upper Box section. Even the one-gig memory card wasn’t enough, that’s why I was only able to catch snippets of most of the performances on camera. Read more…

“Caught you in the arms of another, I’ve been dying everyday since then…” When I heard the lyrics on the radio, I wondered who could be the artist behind that very prolific song. Then, at the end of the song, the DJ mentioned that it was the latest single of Urbandub – and I just said, “Wow.” Read more…

When Plato suggested that art is purely mimetic, I’m sure he failed to predict tribute albums and cover versions of pop songs and such. The Greek thinker must have been totally unprepared for that likelihood: artists taking “Art is a copy” at face value. As such, therefore, covers are twice removed from reality. With the world as the primary object, and the art it inspires as once-removed copies, covers are—in theory, at least—relegated to artistic sloppy seconds Read more…
