It all started after frontman Gerard Way witnessed the September 11 attacks in 2001. In dire need of an outlet to express his thoughts about the tragedy, he then decided to form his own band. He penned the song Skylines and Turnstiles and recorded it with ex-drummer Matt Pelissier in the latter’s attic. Realizing that it was hard to both sing and play an instrument at the same time, he invited guitarist Ray Toro on board. After hearing (and loving) the demo, Gerard’s younger brother Mikey decided to join the group and learned to play the bass. Recognizing their potential, Eyeball Records signed them up. It was there that they met another guitarist, Frank Iero. A few months after MCR was formed, the band recorded its debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love. They were then booked to play at Big Daddy’s, where they began to receive mainstream attention.

In 2003, My Chem had a deal with Reprise Records. The following year, they released their second album entitled Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, which went platinum. It contained the singles I’m Not Okay (I Promise), Helena, and The Ghost of You. It was around this time that the group changed their drummer, picking Bob Bryar. At the start of 2005, the quintet was chosen to be the opening act for Green Day’s American Idiot Tour. Not only that, MCR co-headlined the Warped Tour 2005 with Fall Out Boy, as well.

In April 2006, the boys began the recording for their third CD, The Black Parade, which was officially released on October of the same year. This release spawned the smash hit Welcome to the Black Parade, as well as Famous Last Words, I Don’t Love You, and Teenagers. The album was well-received both commercially and critically, thus establishing My Chemical Romance as a world-famous group with a significant number of supporters.

My Chemical Romance cites Queen, Thursday, Iron Maiden, The Misfits, Morrissey/The Smiths, and the Beastie Boys as their influences. Gerard has said, "We love bands like Queen, where it's huge and majestic, but also bands like Black Flag and the Misfits, who would go absolutely crazy." Their music has been described by the media as pop-punk, emo, alternative rock, post-hardcore, and punk revival. However, the members themselves described their music as simply rock violent, dangerous pop.

To further promote their latest record, the quintet has kicked off The Black Parade World Tour last February 2007. The tour boasts off 106 performances worldwide, as well as several festival and condensed shows, the latest of which is a live concert here in the Philippines. Happening at The Fort Open Field in Taguig City, My Chemical Romance performs this Friday, January 25, 2008,at 8PM.
